Originally from Musselburgh, Marsali has lived in Shetland since 1981. Home is in Aith. She has written a number of plays for young people, both in English and Shetland dialect. Several of these are now published by DramaWorks ( Two Shetland Plays published by Fairplay Press (2009). Many articles published in Shetland Life and other magazines.

Marsali's non-fiction writing includes Women's Suffrage in Shetland, published in November 2010, and Forgotten Heroines: the diaries of Ysabel Birkbeck (2011 and 2017).  She also wrote the crime novel Death on a Longship, published in September 2012, introducing the character Cass Lynch. A series of Cass Lynch books has followed, the latest being Death in a Shetland Lane (2023)
