Originally from Musselburgh, Marsali has lived in Shetland since 1981. Home is in Aith. She has written a number of plays for young people, both in English and Shetland dialect. Several of these are now published by DramaWorks (www.dramaworks.co.uk). Two Shetland Plays published by Fairplay Press (2009). Many articles published in Shetland Life and other magazines.

Marsali's non-fiction writing includes Women's Suffrage in Shetland, published in November 2010, and Forgotten Heroines: the diaries of Ysabel Birkbeck (2011 and 2017).  She also wrote the crime novel Death on a Longship, published in September 2012, introducing the character Cass Lynch. A series of Cass Lynch books has followed, the latest being Death in a Shetland Lane (2023)
