1869 - 1934

Joseph Gray lived in Lerwick and was a blacksmith and engineer. In the 1920s and 30s he wrote a series of what he described as 'sketches and talks in the mother tongue' for the Shetland Times. Some of these were gathered together in book form and became the very popular Shetland classic Lowrie (1933, second impression 1934, second edition 1949, published in paperback by the Shetland Times Ltd in 1991.)
