Jack Peterson
1895 -1972
From Gruting, on Westside of Shetland, brother of Emily Milne. Served in the trenches in the First World War, and originally wrote under the pen name ‘Private Pat’. Three collections of poetry: Roads and Ditches, Streets and Starlight and Shetland, the Island North. Also two volumes of photographs: Shetland - A photographer’s notebook and Notebook No 2 (published after his death).
Jack Peterson's war poetry featured strongly in the 2017 Shetland Youth Theatre production In the Still of the Night have we wept, directed by John Haswell.
