Poetry, Prose and Drama
Laureen Johnson
Shetland possesses some excellent dialect literature, some known and loved by many, some newer and not so widely appreciated – yet. Our writers in the past have tended to be known only on home ground, though several were more widely recognised when they wrote in English. Now there are nationally-recognised writers who write in Shetland dialect.
There is a mixture of approaches to the spelling of the written dialect: many writers follow guidelines such as those put forward by John Graham, some have developed an individual spelling system. Debate about the written form goes on; so, fortunately, does the writing.
Welcome to this exciting selection of Shetland poetry, prose and drama.
