Young Writers 2014 strong in dialect

Shetland Library's Young Writers of 2014 receive their awards at a Wordplay event on Friday 14 November, at 4.30 pm in the Green Room in Mareel.

The subject this year was 'Shetland', and attracted 204 entries, the biggest number yet.  Young Writer Awards are presented at two levels: Junior and Senior. In addition, the Dialect Young Writer award can be won by any entrant.  Perhaps because of the chosen subject, a great number of dialect entries was received.

Judges Mary Blance and Jen Hadfield considered carefully and long before making their choices.

The 2014 Junior Writer of the Year award is shared between Emma Leask of Gulberwick and Merran Thompson of Voe.

The 2014 Senior Writer of the Year award is shared between Chloe Irvine of Whalsay and Megan Nisbet of Yell.

Three of the four winners wrote in dialect. The 2014 Dialect Writer prize is shared between Chloe Irvine and Merran Thompson.
