Shetland-Orkney Library exchange

Using dialects in the work of island libraries

At the SFW October meeting, Morag Nicolson of Shetland Library reported on the Shetland-Orkney library exchange weekend in September.  With funding from the Scottish Islands initiative, three of the Shetland Library staff visited Orkney  to compare library services in the islands. Several events took place over the weekend of 9 September, with a particular emphasis on culture and dialect, featuring, among other things, Shetland Library's dialect place mats for peerie bairns, locally-produced books for bairns, and an Orkney vs Shetland poetry night - which Shetland won. The Library staff are now looking forward to Orkney's return visit.
