John Cumming John Cumming

b.1947, a Burra man now living in Orkney. Former teacher. He is an artist and sculptor who has exhibited widely. His short stories appear in the New Shetlander. In 1997 John's illustrated children's book Peerie Boat won the Shetland Literary Prize and in 2003 his short story Da Net won the Rhoda Bulter prize for dialect writing. John is a founder member of Hansel Cooperative Press. He wrote children’s stories for the CD A Hansel o Stories (2005). Recently he was instrumental in the Mailboats project, which featured co-operative working between writers and artists in both Shetland and Orkney. He was heavily involved in the Hansel Press production of White Below (2010), a book of writing about the fishing industry, another project involving several local writers.
