Lucy wins first Rhoda Bulter Award

The first Rhoda Bulter Award has been won by Lucy Wheeler, formerly of Fair Isle.

The trophy will be presented annually by the Bulter family in memory of their mother, Rhoda Bulter (1929 - 1994).  Rhoda was not only a prolific and well-loved poet, but a talented artist who illustrated her own poetry books.  It was decided that the 2014 Award would be offered for a piece of visual art inspired by Rhoda's work.  The competition was judged by the Bulter family.

The shortlisted entries have been displayed in the Shetland Museum and Archives, and have attracted much admiring comment.  Lucy's winning piece was a woodcut illustration of the bairns' poem 'Nort Wind'.

Winter weather played havoc with the arrangements for the original presentation, but Lucy finally received the serpentine and silver award from the Bulter family at a lunch in the Museum on 30th January.  She was also delighted to receive a copy of the Rhoda Bulter poetry collection, Hairst is Coosed.

The 2015 award will be for a piece of writing. Details to be announced later.
